The second you walk into Lederhosen German Wurst & Bierhaus you're immediately transported from the streets of New York City to a quaint, cozy pub in Munich, Germany. Located on a quiet, tree-lined street in Greenwich Village (39 Grove Street), from its draft beers to its wuerste, schnitzel and spatezel, Lederhosen offers a both authentic and reasonably priced Deutsch menu.

FC Bayern Munich scarves line the walls while soccer (fußball) games are streamed on each TV. The atmosphere is brought even further to life as traditional German folk music (Oompah, polka tunes) fills the room. While there are a few individual tables in the front of the restaurant near the bar area, the back of the restaurant is filled with long fest tables providing family-style feel.

My husband and I decided we would try Lederhosen for my 25th birthday dinner. I was born in Germany, so, what better way to celebrate turning a quarter-century than drinking beer and eating schnitzel?

We showed up during Lederhosen’s happy hour and both ordered a stein of beer ($5 each). Then, instead of an appetizer, we decided to split a bratwurst ($5) before indulging ourselves with schnitzel (FYI... I love schnitzel).

Mark said the bratwurst was the best he’d ever eaten – but to me, it was exactly how we got them in Germany: delicious.

We wound up ordering the same meal (boring, I know), but I didn’t want Mark to miss out on trying Schnitzel for the first time. We ordered two Weiner Schnitzel plates with Spaetzle (German noodles) and brown gravy.

It. Was. Amazing.

It was the closest meal I’ve had to authentic German food since I lived in the country in 2003.

Following the meal, our waitress brought out a decadent slice of German Chocolate cake. It had a single lit candle on top and, as she placed it before me, she wished me a “Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!” (translation: happy birthday!). I didn’t think I could fit another bite of food in my stomach, but one look at this cake I found the room.

Overall, I thought Lederhosen was fantastic. Despite the fact I probably gained 10 pounds in one night (calories don't count on your birthday, right??), I thought the food was top notch and our German waitress and chef were so friendly and helpful - they made the environment that much more enjoyable...they even gave us the cake on the house!

If you're in NYC and you like German food definitely try out Lederhosen. I guarantee you'll leave with a happy heart and stomach. Hope you've found today's review helpful!

Until my next adventure,

Kelly

"One belongs to New York instantly. One belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years."
- Thomas Wolfe

For as long as I can remember, living in New York City has been a dream of mine...and now it's my reality! As an Army Brat, I grew up exporing the world, but I've come to find there's just no place like the Big Apple.

And as a writer, it provides an umlimited supply of inspiration!

New York City has an unmatched energy and excitment around every corner while its people are among the most hard working, inspiring and interesting people I've ever met.

Moving from a small, midwest town to the big city certainly has its challenges (especially for my small town husband who lived in the same one-stoplight town his whole life!) but every day we find more to love in this big, beautiful city on the East Coast.

New York is filled with surprises and, as a newcomer, I love nothing more than exploring and learning everything I can about this amazing place I now call "home."
