Caffeine Fix: O Cafe

Though I’ve been away from my blog for a few weeks because of travel (Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Alabama), starting a new job (Social Media and Blog Coordinator for the Writing Program at The New School), graduate school (hello mid-semester essays!) and writing my memoir, that doesn’t mean I have let up on exploring New York City.

With the cooler, rainier fall weather settling in my coffee shop writing time has been quite enjoyable, especially the time I get to spend at Greenwich Village’s O Cafe (482 6th Avenue). With it’s close proximity to The New School (where I’m studying Creative Writing) O Cafe has been my go-to for pre-class coffee, reading, writing, quick dinners and meetings with new friends.

Like their Brazilian themed menu, the atmosphere in O Cafe is one of a kind. Pastel tables and chairs fill this cozy coffee shop while jazzy tunes play through the speakers. If you go in the evening each table is decorated with tea candles that illuminate the space and make you want to cozy up with a good book and stay a while.

From their house brew to their espresso, I’ve really enjoyed their coffee. O Cafe serves high quality, organic brews from South America and Africa, so they’re full of flavor. I usually order their latte with almond milk and it is always delivered with a fancy foam design.

Like their coffees, their food is also amazing, but the menu is unique so you have to come here with an open mind ready to try something new. I recently tried their Roasted Cauliflower (it’s a little pricy, but well worth it!) served with cashews and spices over yogurt, and I highly recommend it. According to a friend and fellow O Cafe regular, their cheese rolls are to die for. I haven’t yet tried them, but will update this post when I do (very soon).

Another thing I love about O Cafe is that everything they do is done with preserving the environment in mind. All their material (to go spoons, forks, cups, lids, etc.) is compostable and sustainable. They have a perks card that offers every tenth cup of coffee free, but it’s only if you bring your own mug. The use LED/low consumption lights and their walls are made with reclaimed wood from an old barn. According to their website they “want to make the Big Apple a green apple.” Wonderful, right?

With its close proximity to The New School and NYU, O Cafe is always filled with writers, readers and artists, so it's a great place with plenty of space to go if you need inspiration to get work done.

Bonus: O Cafe recently started serving WINE in the evenings. So I’m pretty sure it is now going to be my pre- and post-class go-to spot.

"One belongs to New York instantly. One belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years."
- Thomas Wolfe

For as long as I can remember, living in New York City has been a dream of mine...and now it's my reality! As an Army Brat, I grew up exporing the world, but I've come to find there's just no place like the Big Apple.

And as a writer, it provides an umlimited supply of inspiration!

New York City has an unmatched energy and excitment around every corner while its people are among the most hard working, inspiring and interesting people I've ever met.

Moving from a small, midwest town to the big city certainly has its challenges (especially for my small town husband who lived in the same one-stoplight town his whole life!) but every day we find more to love in this big, beautiful city on the East Coast.

New York is filled with surprises and, as a newcomer, I love nothing more than exploring and learning everything I can about this amazing place I now call "home."
