Thank You, Balto

I always say New York City is filled with surprises, right? Well just recently, while taking my friend and first-time NYC visitor Maggie on a stroll through Central Park, we found maybe the greatest surprise of all time.
YOU GUYS…we found the Balto Statue. THE Balto Statue.

The movie Balto came out in 1995. A dog-obsessed kindergartener at the time, it quickly became my favorite movie. I laughed at Boris the goose, hated the husky Steele (he was the worst) and cheered, cheered, cheered as Balto led the way in pulling a sled filled with medicine into town to save all the sick kids.
The way kids today are obsessed with Frozen, that’s how I was with Balto.
So, needless to say, as Maggie and I stumbled upon the Balto statue in Central Park, there were tears. And hugs. Luckily Maggie is a bigtime Balto fan too, otherwise she would have thought I was crazy.
We rubbed his paw, took a zillion pictures and whispered, “Thank you, Balto.”
Just like they do at the end of the movie. It was surreal.
Central Park is huge, so the Balto Statue is easy to miss. It is located just outside the Tisch Children’s Zoo west of East Drive and 67th Street. According to the Central Park website, this statue of Balto has stood on its rock since 1925 and is a big favorite in the Park.
If you're ever out strolling through Central Park or visiting the Central Park Zoo, make sure you don't miss the statue of this beautiful hero of a dog.
Dogs are the best.
For nostalgia's sake:
